If you read my previous Batman game reviews, you already know that I tend to be a bit biased at times to games with the caped crusaders name attached to it. First I have to apologize to anyone who read my Batman Beyond review...I gave the game a 6/10 initially but after enough game time the game is really, really bad. A 2/10 might have been more appropriate. Anyway, this is a review of the recently released Batman: Gotham City Racer for the Playstation so here we go.
The Dark Knight takes to the streets of Gotham in this ''racing'' game for the PSX. Basically you control the Batmobile or one of three Batcycles (one for Batman, Batgirl and Nightwing) and race through Gotham chasing down and shooting up the vehicles of the Joker, Two-Face, Riddler and others. This is a racing game so you never really control Batman or any of his junior partners, just their vehicles. It's not a bad concept, just different. There are 3 modes of play to choose from. The first mode is the story mode where the scene is set up to a point where you must take over the Batmobile (or whatever vehicle is necessary)and then race through the city to stop the crime, bomb or whatever is going on at the moment. The stages are set up with cut-scenes from the actual animated series, an example would be where Two-Face is escaping with some chemicals to make a gas that would kill the citizens of Gotham the scene will play up to the part where Two-Face exits a building and Batman chasing him, then you are in the Batmobile going after him through the city. Some stages you simply have to follow the villain without being spotted while others you are shooting at each other with various weapons ranging from Batarangs to oil slicks. A little like the old Spy Hunter game. The second mode puts you on city patrol where you drive around till a crime is in progress then you must race to the location and stop the villain before they get away. That, or you could play the antagonist and try to wreck havoc in Gotham while the Dark Knight chases you. An arrow with the batsignal in it is at the top of the screen and helps point you in the right direction at all times. The last mode is a two player mode where one person controls the hero and the other person controls a villain and the two battle throughout the streets of Gotham. I haven't had a chance to play this mode yet so I can't really say much about it.
This isn't really a racing game in a sense that you race around courses/tracks at top speeds trying to beat an opponent. Rather, you race through the streets of one of the most famous fictional cities in the world trying to stop various Batman villains. If anything, this game reminds me a little of the PSX game Driver, you drive a vehicle doing various tasks along the way.

Graphics: 8/10
Graphics are nicely done, nothing outstanding but it has the look of the animated series it is based on. The FMV scense from the series is a nice touch and adds to the story mode. The only real problem I had in this area was that the Batcycles were all little covered ''tanks'' on two wheels. It would have been nice to see the Batcycles look like they do in the cartoon with the cape flying behind our heroes and looking very sleek. Instead the cycles are covered and you don't know who is riding the cycle unless you know the color scheme (I'm assuming that the yellow/black combo is Batgirl, Black/Blue would be Nightwing)

Sound: 7/10
Some nice themes, revving of the engines on the various vehicles and the explosions were all fitting of what they had to do. Nothing outstanding but nothing that diminishes the game either.

Control: 7/10*
I'm not really into racing games so I'm not sure how this game compares to others. My friend that is into racing games though, says that the controls isn't bad but not very tight.

Overall: 8/10
It's a fun game...if you like Batman and racing games. It's not really a racing game and it's not really a Batman game, a little of both if anything. But again, it could just be that I'm such a Batman fan.
