Countdown Vampires [U]

Countdown Vampires [U] ISO

Description :

Countdown Vampires (カウントダウンヴァンパイアーズ) is a survival horror game for the PlayStation developed by K2 LLC and published by Bandai. It distinguished itself from many of the horror games of its time by featuring vampires as the evil element rather than zombies.

Gameplay

The gameplay is highly similar to the earlier games in the Resident Evil series, to the extent of being labelled a "clone"; although there are some additions like a dart gun as a secondary weapon, used to sedate most enemies (mainly, zombie-like "vampires") and then sprinkle "white water" on them to restore their humanity, instead of simply killing all enemies that approach the player (which can also be done). This encourages the player to use a wide variety of fighting techniques if he/she wants to "save" the enemies. As the game advances, more and more creatures appear (whose origins are not that well explained until late in the game), such as Giant Vampire Bats, Werewolf-like creatures, giant humanoid Mantis-like insects, Giant Frog Mutants (which are quite similar to the hunters of Resident Evil), and Purple Blob-things. The dart gun won't work on these types of enemies.
It is possible to reload all guns and to switch between the dart gun and a lethal weapon in real-time without having to use the menu screen. It was also possible to reload in real-time before emptying a firearm's bullet count. There's an "e-mail" system in the item storage boxes which is mainly used to further explain and expand the backstory. It's also notable that there are minigames available in the first part of the game (set in a casino), like roulette and slot machines; the money won in these games can be used to buy food and drinks, the in-game recovery items.
If the game is cleared within 8 hours, a special story mode is unlocked which shows an altered version of the original story and includes additional characters not present in the first playthrough. This also gives the option to gather the 5 "Lucky coins". A minigame called "Prince of Darkness" is unlocked by typing on the second disc as a name Prince Darkness. In this minigame, the player controls a vampire version of Keith which slays humans within a 20 minutes time limit. Game characters appear here as enemies, such as Mira, Sheck, and The Man in Black.

Plot

Sea Rim City Police Homicide Detective Keith J. Snyder had a problem which involved his previous partner, Wesley Simmons, so he was assigned, as a disciplinary measure, to be a bodyguard for several VIPs who were key to the inauguration of a new horror-themed casino, the Desert Moon. The problems began when a fire broke out and a mysterious black liquid started to pour out of the fire sprinklers, turning the vast majority of the people into vampires that proceeded to devour the remaining survivors. Now Keith must find his way out of the casino and also try save the most people he can.

Characters

  • Keith J. Snyder: The game's protagonist, he's a police detective which was hired as a VIP bodyguard and found himself trapped between the chaos at the casino, His Tribal-Mark Tattoo is a possible reference or homage to the fictional character Seth Gecko from the 1996 Action/Horror film From Dusk Till Dawn. Voiced by Barry Gjerde.
  • Misato Hayakawa: A waitress of the Desert Moon, Misato is a Japanese girl who has some significance to what is going on. She's somewhat attracted to Keith. Voiced by Rumiko Varnes.
  • The Man in Black: A mysterious shotgun-wielding person which appears form time to time. Its identity is revealed in the special story. Voiced by Jeff Manning.
  • Alicia S. Tiller: Chairman of a company related to the Desert Moon and also a scientist. Her role is further explored in the special story. Voiced by Bianca Allen.
  • Gells: A shadowy figure which is somewhat mysteriously related to Misato.

Contra - Legacy of War [U] ISO

Contra - Legacy of War [U] ISO

Description :

Contra: Legacy of War is a 3D action game produced by Konami and developed by Appaloosa Interactive that was originally released in 1996 for the PlayStation and Sega Saturn. It was the first of two Contra games that were externally developed by Appaloosa, followed by C: The Contra Adventure in 1998. The game marks the series' jump to three-dimensional graphics and controversial changes in gameplay. Legacy of War was released packaged with a pair of 3D anaglyph glasses, which the game supported. Legacy of War bears the distinction for being the first console game in the series to retain both the Contra title and human characters during its release in Europe and Australia (where the console series has been known as Probotector from the first NES game and up until Contra: Hard Corps). The game was scheduled to be released in Japan as well, but was canceled.

Story

Colonel Bassad, a dictator of a small country, has become a threat and is amassing an army of soldiers, robots, and alien mutants. Bassad has allied himself with an unknown alien entity for his bid to world domination. Ray Poward (returning from Contra: Hard Corps) is deployed to thwart Bassad's scheme along with three of the newest members of the Hard Corps team: Tasha, a female mercenary; CD-288, a robot; and Bubba, an alien. After making the way to Bassad's Mountain Stronghold, the team defeats him in his armored pod, but is dragged into his mind for a final battle. With Bassad defeated, they are teleported to the alien entity, which turns out to be a small living planet. With it destroyed, the team is drifted in space, and a surviving small alien bug is seen hiding.

Gameplay

Each character plays exactly the same except for the type of weapons they yield and their movement speed. All characters start with a machine gun and flamethrower, but the remaining two slots are for player specific weaponry. The game plays from an isometric angle. Since the game takes place in three dimensions, enemies come from all angles. Ducking and strafing have been added to the player's abilities, as well as an auto-aiming feature to help attack airborne enemies. Jumping has been slightly changed as the characters no longer do tightly curled somersault jumps (a feature in every previous game since the arcade version of the original Contra). The player's progress can be saved to a memory card.

Command & Conquer - Red Alert ISO

Command & Conquer - Red Alert ISO

Description :

Command & Conquer Red Alert gives you the opportunity to be more devious, cunning and ruthless than ever before. Easy to play and highly addictive. Red Alert puts the fate of the world in your hands.

Command and Conquer is a very popular and well known game on the PC and the makers also converted it to Playstation, like many popular PC games. I had never played it on the PC before, but I had only heard and read about, so the game was almost completely new to my. I didn’t even knew it also existed on the Playstation, so I was pretty amazed to see the game in the Playstation section. It was on sale, so I thought “what the heck, let’s see if it’s as good as they say.” The back of the game said it had over two dozen missions and many kinds of weapons, so it had more than enough things to do.

The graphics 6/10

The graphics are quite bad in this game, it all runs in a very LOW resolution. Your troops, buildings and the environment all look very ugly, but it’s all recognizable thought. Personally I think they used a low resolution to prevent slowdown, the Playstation isn’t that powerful, remember...

The sound 8/10

The sound is quite good: just as they said on the back of the game, the soundtracks are very cool and fit the game just right, there is some march music, for example.
The sound effects aren’t so special but they work, it just gets a bit annoying when the troops keep saying the same sentence over and over again. The music rocks and the effects are nothing special.

Gameplay 8/10

The controls are very good and easy to learn, even with a controller they still work good. The missions are fun to play and there are many missions for both sides: The Soviet and the Allies both have about a dozen of missions. You can also play skirmish missions, where you can set all the options to your likeness. The missions take quite long to complete (except the first missions), so it keeps you busy for quite a long time.

Replay 8/10

The missions should keep you busy for quite a while and when you’ve finished those you can still play the skirmish missions or you can play it against one of your friends via a link cable.

Overall 8/10 (actually 7.6/10)

It may look bad, but it sounds good and it plays good as well. It also has a long durability, which I think is very important. But if you find the graphics really important, you won’t like it. It may not be the best of its kind, but it sure is a good one. It keeps his reputation pretty high, well done!
